During the bye week, former LSU stars and current Arizona Cardinals defensive backs Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu showed up as honorary captains for the No. 13 Tigers in their matchup against top-ranked rival Alabama on Saturday.
The pair starred in the Tigers secondary during a 2010 victory over then-No. 5-ranked Alabama. LSU finished the season the No. 8 team in the country with an 11-2 record and a Cotton Bowl victory against Texas A&M.
The following season, Mathieu was a key catalyst on one of the best defenses in college football. LSU faced off with Alabama in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in November, getting the best of the Crimson Tide in a 9-6 overtime thriller. LSU and Alabama found themselves in a rematch in the National Championship game, where the Tigers fell 21-0.
LSU’s hopes that Peterson and Mathieu would bring a bit of luck to the Tiger sideline didn’t pan out on Saturday, as the Crimson Tide pulled off a 10-0 win in yet another defensive battle between the longstanding SEC West rivals.
